The Get Away
Dreaming of fine white sand and clear blue water? Us too! We love our work, but there’s nothing like getting away for some ‘me time’ – a week (or even two) to unwind and relax with family and friends or enjoy a romantic break with your partner.
It’s been a long winter, but the end is almost in sight, and thoughts are moving to holiday plans for the year. The sun is calling, and so is dosing up on vitamin D. Indeed, from October to early March, our bodies don’t make enough from sunlight.
We all get that ‘I need a holiday’ feeling, especially when it’s cold and rainy and the days are short. Couple that with hectic (and sometimes stressful) careers and busy family lives, and the desire to get away intensifies. Everyone needs a break, regardless of their situation – time to relax and recharge their batteries.
Where do your daydreams take you? Whether it’s an exotic island surrounded by azure sea, a lakeside retreat, a city weekender, or a tropical all-inclusive beach resort, once you’ve hit that ‘book’ button and received a confirmation email, the excitement starts to bubble and the countdown begins.
Planning kicks off in earnest, too: deciding what clothes to take, shopping for new ones, and making a list of things to buy, like sunscreen and travel-size toiletries. And then, thoughts move to the airport and maybe treating yourself to a pair of shades or that bottle of perfume you’ve had your eye on.
The build-up also involves researching things to do and restaurants to sample when you arrive at your destination of choice. What attractions are nearby, and are there must-try local dishes and drinks? And let’s not forget regularly checking the weather in the run-up to your departure – even though there’s zilch you can do if it doesn’t play ball!
There’s nothing like having a trip to look forward to. It’s thought that ‘vacation anticipation’ can last for two months. But holidays aren’t just an indulgence: they contribute to good health and wellbeing. How? By reducing stress, boosting your mood, promoting mental resilience, and improving your productivity when you return home feeling rejuvenated.
Holidays are also an opportunity to unwind, re-energise, spend precious moments with loved ones and catch up on sleep. At the same time, they offer the chance to explore new landscapes, throw yourself into adventurous activities and discover new cultures and cuisines.
What’s top of your list when jetting off to warmer climes? Lazing around an infinity pool with a cocktail in hand, chilling on a lounger by the ocean admiring the view, or maybe you enjoy checking out the sights and meeting new people? There isn’t a correct answer: holidays are personal experiences.
Whatever your preference, a few holiday fundamentals generally remain the same: switching off and leaving the daily routine behind. A time to put yourself first, focus on your wellbeing and make unforgettable memories.
